ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are both published by the International Organization for Standardization and follow the same High Level Structure, which is why they’re often implemented together as an integrated management system. Even so, each standard has a different focus.
ISO 9001 — quality management system
ISO 9001 focuses on consistent product or service quality and customer satisfaction. It’s relevant to almost any type of organization, from manufacturing to services, that wants to demonstrate its work processes reliably deliver the intended output.
ISO 14001 — environmental management system
ISO 14001 focuses on managing the environmental impact of an organization’s activities — such as resource use, waste management, and compliance with environmental regulations. It’s especially relevant for organizations whose operations directly affect the environment, such as manufacturing, construction, and mining.
When does a company need both?
Companies that want to demonstrate a dual commitment to product quality and environmental responsibility — for example, to meet government tender requirements or the expectations of international business partners — typically pursue dual certification. Because the structures are similar, an integrated audit covering both standards can be more efficient than undergoing two separate audits.
